How to clean your electric skateboard properly
Dirt is inevitable. If you are actually riding your board, it is going to get covered in trail dust, street grime, belt fuzz and the kind of debris that finds its way into every gap and crevice. The mistake most riders make is not cleaning too little, it is cleaning the wrong things the wrong way. Water and electronics are a genuinely dangerous combination, and knowing which parts need attention and which parts need to stay dry is the difference between a well-maintained board and an expensive repair.
This guide covers how to clean an Evolve board the right way, with specific notes for all-terrain setups that see real off-road use.
Start with what actually gets dirty
Not all components collect grime equally. The parts that take the most punishment are the wheels and hubs, the belts and drive gears, the trucks, the underside of the deck and the motor casings. These are your priorities. The battery enclosure, ESC and motor ports need to stay dry, so the cleaning approach for those is different from the mechanical components.
Before you start, power the board off completely. Do not clean the board while it is powered on or charging. Give it time to cool if you have just finished a ride, especially after pushing the motors hard on a trail.
Wheels, hubs and tyres
On an all-terrain setup, the wheels carry the most visible grime. Mud, grass, gravel and trail debris pack into the hub openings and around the axle nuts. Start here.
Use a stiff brush, something like a firm-bristled cleaning brush or an old toothbrush for tighter areas, and knock the loose debris free. A dry cloth or compressed air works well for dust-heavy surfaces. If the tyres genuinely need a wash, a lightly damp cloth is fine for the rubber itself. Keep water well away from the hub motor area and bearings.
Check tyre pressure while you are here. The 7-inch pneumatic tyres on all-terrain Evolve setups run best at 40 to 45 PSI. Trail riding drops pressure faster than road riding, and an underinflated tyre changes the feel of the board noticeably.
Belts and drive gears
Belts are where riders often find the most neglected buildup. Small stones, dirt and belt dust accumulate around the drive gear teeth and between the motor pulley and guard. This causes premature belt wear and in some cases belt skipping under load, which you will feel as a jerk or loss of drive at high torque moments.
Use compressed air to blow debris out of the drive gear and belt gap. A dry brush handles the rest. Do not use any lubricant on the belts themselves. They run dry. If you notice the belt looking frayed or cracked at the edges, that is the time to replace it, not patch it.
While you are down here, check belt tension by pressing lightly on the belt mid-span. A small amount of give is normal. A belt that is too loose slips; one that is too tight puts unnecessary stress on the motor bearings over time.
Trucks and baseplate
The trucks collect road salt in coastal cities and trail mud everywhere else. In places like Miami or Los Angeles where you are riding close to salt air and ocean spray, this buildup accelerates corrosion on any exposed metal if left unchecked.
Wipe the truck baseplate, hanger and kingpin area with a dry or very lightly damp cloth. For heavier dirt, a dry brush works well. The bushings do not need any treatment during regular cleaning, but it is worth a visual check to see whether they are cracking or deforming. Cracked bushings change how the board turns and are a simple, inexpensive fix.
The deck and undercarriage
The underside of the deck takes a beating on all-terrain setups, especially when you are pushing through brush or riding tracks where debris gets flicked upward. Wipe it down with a dry cloth and pay attention to the battery enclosure seams. The Diablo series includes reinforced lip seals and improved battery sealing, but that is splash resistance, not waterproofing. Persistent moisture sitting in seams is a risk over time.
On the grip tape side, a stiff brush removes embedded trail dirt effectively. Avoid soaking the grip tape, the moisture wicks through and puts pressure on the deck laminate beneath. Keep it dry.
Motors
The motors need airflow and cleanliness to perform well and stay within temperature range. Do not spray water anywhere near the motor housing. Compressed air is your tool here. Blow out any debris from around the motor casing and motor mount area. If the board has been ridden in particularly dry, dusty conditions, such as the kind of fire roads you find outside Austin or the dry trails in the San Fernando Valley, the motors may collect a surprising amount of fine dust. It does not take much to build up a layer that affects cooling efficiency over time.
Let the motors cool completely before cleaning them after a long ride. Brushing or blowing debris onto hot motor windings is not ideal.

At 31 lbs, it is not a light board, but the weight is well-distributed. Riders in New York using it as a mixed commuter, or riders in San Francisco tackling longer descents, will notice that regular maintenance keeps the braking response sharp and predictable. A dirty belt or a contaminated drive gear is one of the fastest ways to undermine what is otherwise a very controlled braking system.
After a wet or muddy ride
Current Evolve boards are not waterproof. They have improved sealing compared to older generations, but that protection has limits. If you have ridden in wet conditions or through standing water on a trail, the priority when you get home is to dry the board before storing it.
Stand the board on its tail briefly to let any water drain away from the deck seams. Dry the enclosure, motors and truck area with a cloth. Let it sit in a ventilated space before putting it away. Do not store a wet board in a bag or enclosed case. Trapped moisture causes corrosion and degrades the battery seals over time.
Water damage is not covered under warranty. The best outcome from a wet ride is one where the board is dried thoroughly before the moisture has time to find a path through the sealing.
How often is often enough
A quick wipe-down and belt inspection after every off-road ride is a reasonable habit. A more thorough clean, covering belts, drive gears, truck hardware and motor area, makes sense every three to five rides depending on conditions. If you are riding coastal paths in Miami or dusty fire roads outside of Austin, lean toward the more frequent end.
The goal is not obsessive maintenance. It is catching the things that quietly degrade performance before they become a repair. A board that gets basic attention consistently outperforms a neglected one in ways you notice every ride: sharper braking, smoother acceleration, predictable handling and longer component life.
